After listening to friends talk about their exotic vacations abroad using miles they earned on Qantas reward cards, or any credit card offering travel rewards, you might be tempted to make your first credit card a Qantas rewards card so you too can jet off to an exotic location next year using miles you have earned. First, you’re almost certainly not going to earn enough miles in one year to take an exotic vacation unless you are a huge spender with an incredibly high income who for some reason does not have a credit card.
If you are single, and it’s just you using the card, unless you have a job where you put your frequent and very high travel expenses on your Qantas rewards card and the are reimbursed by your employer, you might earn a free flight or a gift certificate, but not much else.
Many people overextend themselves financially by misusing credit cards, especially their first credit card. If you are not paying off the balance each month, you are paying very high interest. To pay this high interest just to earn a free flight is foolish. You must be realistic about your spending habits before getting any credit card, let alone a Qantas rewards card which usually requires a person to have a good credit history anyway.
